Really important to know your subject. build up a bond with them.
Equipment which would be needed for this technique would be a tripod, this is important because it means you are able to focus on the positioning of your subject alongside the background to try to make it as "central" and "straight-lined" as possible- this way it would look much neater, instead of just taking an image and thinking "yep that'll do".
