Shoot one- The change of Fashion in youth culture- Image Bank

This image is intriguing because it appears to of been taken with a film camera- this gives an older effect to the image, alongside wight the style of the subject. The denotation of this image is a girl with space buns and a denim jacket with a patch on the back. This holds the connotation of this image being taken during the 90s this is because of the punctum of the patch on her jacket. Without this patch, there wouldn't be anything for the eye to be drawn to, however as it in the centre and is the key focus pull of the image, it makes it really interesting. Furthermore, this image is an influence to my work because I intend to take images of people wearing clothes with patches on because I find them eye drawing and as being able to tell a story on the person.
This image is very similar to the work of Gavin Watson who is found in my research log. As spoken on that post, I find these images very intriguing in showing the change of youth fashion because Dr. Martens were high in fashion during the 80s, but have recently come into fashion again recently. This is symbolic because it's hard to tell what era this fashion belongs to, but at the same time shows how in the modern day (today) people are going back and reliving the old styles. Dr. Martens were originally shoes wore for industrial work, yet they grew out to be more and more fashionable with the skinheads showing a rebellion side of youth within this era as it would have been the working class families who had these in their household. The youths in the house would have seen their fathers (stereotypically) wearing them and perhaps stole them to wear the shoes themselves- as a rebellion attitude. With this image, its a low  level, mid shot showing just the calves and shoes of a subject, with a puddle on the floor showing the reflection. This puddle can have a connotation of the image of the reflecting fashion modern day is having to the 80s. For one of my images, I hope to take an image with someone wearing DMs because I believe it would be able to show the change on fashion of youth as reoccurring.
This is another example of 90s fashion. The close up technique for this image makes it really intriguing as the audience are able to get a feel for the outfit without seeing everything the subject it wearing. The use of complimentary colours in this outfit shows individuality. In the 90s people whore clothes to symbolise themselves, the use of the contrasting colours within this image supports this. This image could also be argued to be ironic. The tucking in of tops is usually done for formal events/ those in the middle class, yet in this image the type of clothing suggests a working class background- denim, yet has their top tucked in. Furthermore, this image is useful in showing a change in fashion with youth because of the belt. Originally, belts were worn as a way to keep your trousers up, however as fashion has progressed, belts have become and added accessory- this is shown in this image because the subject has chosen a belt which colour contrast the top- it's a different shade, showing them trying to stand out. This is influencing my work because I intend to take images through using the close up technique used in this image so my audience can only get a sense of my subjects personality through the part of outfit shown.
This image portrays a skinhead/ punk (for modern day) which I find inspiring for this shoot because even though you cannot see the subjects face, you are still bale to build a view of this subject being rebellious who doesn't listen to anyone, especially their parents. This view can be formed because there is the argument of what parents would want their child to grow up like this and be rebelling everything? This image is very similar/ interlinks with the work of photographer Gavin Watson who also takes images of skinheads. This image is also very intriguing into the change of fashion within youth culture because even though people don't wear this as much as they might have, it is still common into showing a rebelling stage of youth. Therefore this can be used to build a negative stereotype of youth. Furthermore, I choose this image because of the irony, the photographer who got this image shot it within a studio with quite soft lighting which contrasts the amount of spikes and studs within this outfit- accessories which are normally referred to a "harsh" and "scary" through the boldness of them.

This image is really interesting because even though someone may look at this and see the dennoation of just being a sock saying something which is quite rude, yet the implied meaning of this image may be that this subject is trying to portray and express their true selves through their outfit in the subtle form of it on a sock. Not only this but this image is intriguing because their is irony within this through the punctum- the pure white laces. Even though what the sock is saying suggests someone who doesn't care, their shoes and more importantly their laces are still so clean, suggesting they must care to some extent. This connotation can further lead onto a negative stereotype of youth have their priorities in the "wrong place" they care more for their appearance than they do on their manners. If this was a full body portrait, they audience may be lead to think differently about their person- the general "judging a book by the cover", because the audience would have been able to see what this subject really looks like, yet as we can only see the subjects socks and shoes, we are lead to believe this subject to be rebellious and careless.

This is a final example of the "modern" day fashion. The punctum in this image which makes it interesting is the gold chunky watch. Nowadays their is an importance placed onto both what you wear and how much you paid for it- alongside to whether it is real or not. As the watch is the key focal point of this image we are lead to believe this subject is quite wealthy. This combines with the theory of Klein and logo culture- people nowadays are becoming walking, talking logos for a brand, the chunky watch in this image supports this. Additionally, you can see a change in fashion because of the hoodie this subject is wearing. Orginally, people would see a grey hoodie and stereotypically think "CHAV" or someone of the working class background- for example. However, in this image we can see a logo on the jumper and automatically we as the audience link this with wealth, this person must have paid a lot for this jumper because is a brand.  Therefore this image can be used to influence this shoot to show has stereotypically, generally nowadays, the fashion isn't what you wear per say, but its where you got it from and how much you paid for it- thus influencing me to include brands within my more modern fashion photos.
